Theme from Cannonball Statman
Following last month’s release of the single “Tom Turkey” and June’s release of Killing The Flowers Will Not Delay Spring, which features a new version of Cannonball’s song “Henry Hudson” from his upcoming self-titled 32nd album, today marks the release of another single from the album and the launch of the BandCamp pre-order of the album, which will be released in its entirety on the 17th of October.
It seemed appropriate to launch the pre-order on the day of this particular single’s release, because this single is Cannonball’s own theme song, “Theme from Cannonball Statman” – seeing as one of the main purposes of this specific album is to unite the fans of Cannonball’s live work with the fans of his recorded work, by telling the story of what it’s like to attend a Cannonball Statman gig and capturing Cannonball’s signature performing style (while his previous albums had focused on telling other stories with often wildly varying aesthetics unrelated to what he does on stage) – it seems fitting to now be releasing the first ever studio recording of his theme song, which has been a known staple of his live performances for over a decade while remaining relatively obscure to diehard fans of his recorded work who’ve yet to make it to a gig.
This recording of Cannonball’s theme song is also noteworthy for its all-star cast of musical collaborators, featuring the Mexico City based artists Jojo Rita and Amazilia on melodica and saxophone and additional vocals, in addition to production by Ben Turner and vocal contributions from Edd Martin, Imogen Martin, Rosie Martin, Albie Martin, and the Belgian-Dutch romantic punk artist France de Griessen.
Additionally, you’ll find the track “Ghosts! (We Have Always Been At War)” is also already available as part of the pre-order alongside the two “official singles” that have now been released – this song has become a staple of Cannonball’s live outings more recently, and I’ve “hyped it up” multiple times on this blog now despite no recorded versions of it having been released until today – this song is the kind of anti-imperialist battle cry that Cannonball and I have serious ethical reservations about turning a profit from – so we’ve made it available as a free download instead. Save your money, enjoy the music, and donate instead to those who are doing the work on the ground – Cannonball recommends PCRF, the Freedom Theatre, and Operation Olive Branch.
Next month, the third and final “official single” from the album will be released. Until the end of this month, the 2024 series of “classic Cannonball” album reissues from the 2010s are also continuing to take place both on BandCamp and on streaming services – and by the end of 2024, all 32 albums from Cannonball’s “official” list thus far will be available online.
See you soon!

Loving ‘Tom Turkey’ – France’s voice is just beautiful! Can’t wait till the full release!
Thanks, Graham! It was France’s idea for me to start playing that song again – it had been part of my live sets in the early 2010s, and she dug up a video of it from back then and insisted I bring it back into my set list – it was a great idea, I’m not sure why I’d stopped playing that song! Glad you’re enjoying the singles.
… I meant to say your vocals and guitar are as brilliant as ever, Jesse!!!
