When it Rains (2011)

This is a darker one – it has this arrangement of nylon string acoustic guitar, vocals, bass, and percussion that comes together in a way that’s more melancholy and brooding, kind of a “slow burn” feeling throughout.

The last song in particular is really sad – it’s about the kind of future a lot of people saw for me when I was a kid and teenager, which was just me living in a kind of psychiatric prison or concentration camp – but in the song, the idea is also that I’d get out of there somehow.

There’s always a kind of optimism in these songs, because I’m fundamentally an optimist – but at the same time, I made these songs when I was a teenager – and that time in my life was just not very happy.
