Painting with You (2011)
This is a fun one! It got a bit of play on the radio, especially in Michigan, where there was a radio station that was selling some of the CDs at one point – unfortunately, someone stole a bunch of CDs from the station to sell them for drug money, and they stopped selling CDs for awhile after that because they were kinda spooked.
The arrangement of Painting with You is a full rock band setup, similar to Pizza Carbonara – mostly drums, bass, electric guitars, keys, and vocals.
It has a lot of songs, mostly an upbeat vibe – it was partly made in celebration of the fact that I painted a big mural on the wall of my bedroom for basically no reason other than to celebrate being alive – and, I was finally graduating from high school – so I think I was a lot happier than usual when I made this one.
The title track and the version of “Until 19” from this album are both online in music video form – and the version of “6 Train” from this album is also on one of my Cannonball Statman albums, it’s the same exact recording – most of these songs are not available anywhere, though.
I might reissue this at some point, because it’s just a really fun album – it’s really sloppy in some places, but I think that’s part of what people like about it.
I also played a homemade instrument called the “band box” on the song “Hawaii” – this was an instrument made out of a box that my Band Of The Land bandmate Beth’s friend built for us to store our cassettes, with the name of our band printed on it – I attached strings to the box to turn it into a kind of experimental stringed instrument, which Beth also played the solo from “Hawaii” on at a concert we did in Brooklyn in early 2011 – that concert was the first one to ever be billed as a Jesse Statman concert, after I’d been doing performances of my songs with other projects for awhile, but never billing myself as myself – so we made it into a big celebration and made a whole DVD of it called Band Forever: Live at Perch Cafe, since it was like my “first show” in a sense.
