For Your Listening Pleasure (2010)
This was probably my darkest album of this period. I was going through a lot at the time, and what I was trying to express in the album was how I felt as I was processing the trauma of being raped, while simultaneously feeling like I had deserved it, because I had felt like I was a genuinely horrible person after some of the ways I’d been for a few years when I was a kid and in my early teens.
A lot of the songs make heavy use of bass guitar, with fingerpicked bass lines playing a similar role to what a rhythm guitarist normally would, and the electric guitars playing either just lead parts or faint, sparse strums that are atmospheric and inconsistent – there’s one song with percussion (“The Cave of Snow”), and some songs with more use of the guitar, but the bass is probably the most frequently heard instrument on the album.
I made a bunch of CDs of this one, and I think the CD ultimately did better than the online release – it’s a pretty disturbing album overall, to the point where I often worried if people who bought the CD were really prepared for it, since most of them really only knew my lighter work. I’m glad I made this album, because it was important to express what I was going through in some way – but I’m also not planning on doing much with it in the future, because it’s such a traumatic one.
