Band of the Land Beach (2004)
This was our first CD!
We had a lot of fun with this one – musically, it was the most sophisticated and polished thing we recorded as a band, and it benefited a lot from how we were able to layer our instruments and voices through recording it on a computer instead of a cassette recorder.
A couple of the songs from Beach were re-released as part of the Cannonball Statman album Transformation in the 24 Hour Deli almost a decade later – “Band Forever” and “I Feel Home (Again)” – the short clip of me singing a cappella at the very beginning of that album is also taken from this CD.
Some of the other highlights of this one are “The Younger Ones Are Taking Our Place” (a sentimental song about getting old), “As Clear As Rain” (a song about depression and riding the subway in New York), “Plane Service” (a rock and roll song about airline food that I also performed with a few other local bands during that same era), and the closing track “Sun Band”, which was a sweet song about friendship that had a ton of different layered vocals, guitars, percussion, and wind chimes.
I don’t remember how many copies we made of this one, and I’m not sure how many people would still have it, but it was a really fun album to make and it’s a fun one to listen to – I might re-release some of the songs from it in the future.
