The Baseball Effect (2005)

In the summer of 2005, while I was still finishing the second Baseball Effect, I came up with the idea to make a third Baseball Effect with some friends at summer camp – this one was very similar to the second Baseball Effect in terms of the storylines and the names of the characters, but there were some significant differences – it was less than 20 minutes long, it took place in a summer camp where the character Jack resides as a result of his strange life circumstances, and none of the actors in the other two Baseball Effects except for me are in this one – all of these differences were simply due to the fact that we made it at summer camp.

I don’t remember what this was about, but it seems to have been something to do with my parents owing money to the summer camp that same year, because I arrived late (?) – but I wrote my dog’s name instead of mine (?)

I think this was the most conventionally well-made of the 3 Baseball Effects – we had access to much more high-quality equipment and software that was provided by the summer camp, and it was a much more concise, linear, accessibly paced, and conventionally told story – people who saw all 3 did end up mourning the lack of spontaneity and quirkiness in this one, but it was also easier to “get” what the story was on the first viewing – which made it better suited to the contexts in which the Baseball Effect movies were generally seen – since they were screened infrequently, and for groups of people who would mostly not be in a position to see them again, as there were few physical copies ever made, if any, and they were never released online.

Overall, I’m glad we made the 3 Baseball Effect movies, but I’m also not interested in reissuing them, or revisiting them at all, really.

I learned a lot about filmmaking through being involved with these, and I think everyone involved had a good time – and it’s an interesting story that I think a lot of people resonate with these days – I just wouldn’t be interested in telling it in this specific way anymore.
