A Year of Cannonballism (2013)
This was a limited edition CD for the one year anniversary of my bizarre hand injury that inspired me to change my artist name to Cannonball Statman.
Though I’d done a couple DVDs of my concerts as Jesse Statman, those were only released as movies, not as albums – so I suppose this was technically my first ever live album.
It’s all live recordings from shows I did in NYC that year, both as a solo artist and with various lineups of the Cannonball Statman band.
It has a bunch of songs that aren’t available anywhere else, including an acoustic version of my song “Cannonballism” – and really, only people who were coming to our shows in 2013 have copies of this CD – there are probably about 100 of these floating around, and I doubt there are many outside of NYC, because I don’t think I took them on any of my tours – it was something I did for our NYC fans as a kind of souvenir from that very specific time in our lives.
The photo on the album cover is me wearing a “panda ear hat”, which me and some of my bandmates would wear at our shows – mine had a way of dramatically falling off my head during the first song of every show, because my head is too damn big.
The reason for the hats was as an homage to our friend Ian, who came to one of our first ever shows in a panda costume – it was such a cool costume, and Ian is such a cool guy, so we convinced him to come on stage and do yoga while we were playing – he ended up joining the band a few more times on stage, including at the first ever Cannonballfest! in January 2013 at The LAB in Brooklyn.
The rest of us didn’t have any full body panda costumes, so we just wore the hats. Our fans thought this was great, and it was also entertaining how offensive it was to certain types of unsavory men who would frequent our early shows trying to hook up with young women – our weird hats had the unintentional effect of scaring away a lot of these men, because it made them think we were really gay – they began referring to us as “the panda f*ggots” and finally boycotting our shows.
Some of us are really gay, to be fair – and some of us are neither gay nor straight – but it was pretty hilarious that these men saw us wearing funny hats and suddenly assumed we were gay, after having assumed we were straight when we weren’t wearing funny hats.
