A Demonstration of Cannonball Statman’s Musical Talent (2012)

The concept behind this one was kind of silly – the idea was that I was starting to become known on the scene in NYC for performing a bunch of acoustic Cannonball Statman songs that weren’t on Eight Folk Songs – and people wanted to have recordings of those songs, especially because people often like to hear my songs a number of times to really “get” all the layers of what’s happening in the lyrics.

When you work for a living, you can’t make it to every Cannonball Statman show – so even if I’m playing several nights a week in NYC, as I was back then, it might take years before you hear the song as many times as you need to – and by then, I have new songs and I’m playing a completely different setlist.

So people wanted a way they could listen to the songs on repeat, but it wasn’t going to be a super polished studio recording, because I was a broke teenager – and no one was really asking for that at the time. So I quickly recorded a bunch of these songs in my bedroom and burned some CDs.

I called it A Demonstration of Cannonball Statman’s Musical Talent as a tongue-in-cheek way of alluding to it being a “demo CD” that doesn’t function as demo CDs were originally intended to, because everyone I gave it to was already a fan of my work.
